Text Box: The Department is pleased to recognize Judith Woodfolk, MBChB, PhD, as a newly appointed Assistant Professor in the Division of Allergy and Clinical Immunology.  
Judith received her medical training at Sheffield University Medical School in the United Kingdom.  Subsequently, she came to the Asthma and Allergic Diseases Center at the University of Virginia where she worked as a Research Associate with Tom Platts-Mills.
As her commitment to a research career grew she chose to pursue a PhD in the Molecular Medicine Program at UVA.  After receiving her PhD in 2000, Judith remained on faculty Text Box: within the Asthma Center where her research program has continued to prosper.  Judith was the recipient of the 2001 Beirne Carter Center Immunology Research Award and the 2003 AAAAI/Fujisawa Allergic Skin Diseases Research Award.  She was awarded an R01 in May 2004 entitled “Immune Response to Cat: Regulatory and Effector T cells”
Judith’s research centers on the role of T cells associated with IgE-mediated diseases such as asthma and atopic dermatitis (AD).  She is interested in defining T cell mechanisms, which control the development of allergic and non-allergic responses in humans. A primary focus of her laboratory is to define Text Box: the phenotype and function, as well as the antigen  specificity, of discrete T cell subpopulations and the relationship of these cells to IgE antibody status.

Text Box: NOBEL PRIZE! 
Dr. Barry Marshall, Professor of Research in the School of Medicine, was awarded the 2005 Nobel Prize in physiology or medicine for discovery of the link between gastric ulcers and infection with Helicobacter pylori. 
Dr. Marshall worked at UVA in the Division of Gastroenterology from 1986-1996 as a research fellow, Gastroenterologist and Professor of Medicine, but has remained on the UVA faculty after his return to his native Australia.
